Open Question: living in Florence for 6 weeks?

I am enrolling in an italian language learning program in Florence for 6 weeks. I am 19 years old, and wondering if thats a good town for a 19 year old to be. Obviously i am going to want to experience the art, architecture, food, and culture.... But i also wanted to know if it was young-friendly. Is the nightlife ok? are there fun things for people my age to do? Also what are expenses like? I know Italy is very expensive as is, just wondering what it will be like to buy necessities like food there....How much might i need per week? Maybe experianced travelers could give me advice on some non-touristy places? The school itself will be taking us on "field trips" but just in my free time i would adore to go by myself and toss myself into the culture! My great grandparents came from Lucca, so i HAVE to go there, if you have information about that, then please let me know!
